Everyone needs to see their dentist regularly. Dentists are specially trained professionals dedicated to the care of teeth and gums. Most often, serious conditions can be correctly diagnosed by a general dentist, and even if he or she cannot perform the necessary specialized procedure, another dental professional can. A periodontist is an oral health care specialist that corrects problems with gums, loose or misaligned teeth, and poorly supported roots.

Periodontists have extensive training in the areas of tooth and gum disease. Their primary concern is preventative care so that serious problems with the gums never occur. This includes a wide range of periodontal diseases. However, a periodontist is usually called in to help via the referral from a family dentist.

The Difference Between A Dentist And A Periodontist

What A Dentist Can Do For You

A dentist performs regular checkups to see if any problems are developing with the teeth, roots, or gums. Periodic cleaning is performed so that the teeth and gums will be free of bacterial growth or plaque. The teeth are whitened from time to time to improve the overall appearance of the client.

Dentists take X-rays so that problems with bacteria and other infections can easily be spotted. Dentists can also replant loose teeth so long as the root structure integrity has not been severely compromised. If the client is experiencing bleeding gums, the dentist can check to see if the problem is being caused by infection or gum tissue degradation. If this is the problem, the client will be referred to a periodontist.

Periodontist: A Specialized Oral Care Professional

Periodontists specialize in the overall health of the gums. Quite often, loose teeth are the results of bacterial infection that have caused a loss of gum strength. In some cases, toothaches are caused by problems in the gums that have now begun to affect the health of the tooth root. Periodontal disease is a very serious condition that requires specialized treatment.

Periodontists have training beyond what is completed by a regular dentist. They spend several years past dental school becoming trained in the areas of tooth and gum disease. They can correctly diagnose problems with gum health and root health. In addition to treating common gum diseases, they also are trained to perform such procedures as root planing and scaling. Root surface cleaning is a very specialized procedure, one that is usually beyond the expertise of general dentists.

Periodontal care must be customized for every individual. This is because some of the treatment procedures involve the use of medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs or other pharmaceuticals. This means that the periodontist must review the client’s medical history to see what other conditions the individual may be experiencing and what other drugs he or she may currently be taking.

Periodontists also closely check for receding gum lines, tooth fit when biting, and the depth of periodontal pockets. This allows the periodontist to detect early warning signs of infection or other possible tooth problems.

Listen To The Dentist

If the general practitioner recommends a specialist such as a periodontist, it’s a very good idea to follow the recommendation. These specialists are in existence for a good reason, and that’s to prevent problems with oral health from getting out of control.
