Everyone has endured the pounding conundrum of pain called a headache. Old and young, tall and small, everyone has had them. They are typically caused either by overactivity in or issues with pain-sensitive structures in that area. When the blood vessels, nerves or muscles in the head or neck become aggravated it can lead to pain in the form of a headache. The most common types of headaches are sinus headaches, tension headaches, cluster headaches, and migraine headaches. Each headache typically requires a different form of medication or treatment. Sometimes lifestyle changes can help diminish the frequency of headaches, offering some relief. However, headaches can often be a sign of something worse.

Common Causes of Headaches

Headaches can be caused by any number of things, many of which are still being discovered. Others are known all too well. High blood pressure and severe dehydration can both be accompanied by a headache. Stress or tension and sinus issues can also cause head pain. Untreated eye issues, such as the need for glasses or contacts, can cause some severe headaches. The strain of looking at a screen for too long can also have the same effect along with certain medications. Sometimes a headache can be the result of your own doing, such as with a hangover or eating ice cream too fast. Involuntary actions, like grinding your teeth at night, can also cause headaches.

There are some signs you can watch out for to know when its time to visit the doctor. Of course, anytime you have a headache severe enough to interfere with daily activities you should have it checked out. If you have a headache that gets worse over time or is accompanied by fever, nausea or vomiting you should see a physician. Anytime a headache is accompanied by slurred speech or numbness in any limbs it could be very serious, and you should go to the emergency room. If it is accompanied by a loss of balance or confusion you should contact your medical provider immediately.

There is still a lot of information to learn about an elusive headache and its causes. Many times, you may know the cause and the best way to treat your headache. Other times, the issue may not be that clear-cut. If your headache comes on suddenly and seems to be the worst ever, it could be more serious. Most people have a headache at some point, but frequent headaches are not normal. It is important not to simply dismiss frequent headaches as they could be a sign of something worse.
