There are many reasons that people consume marijuana. In many cases finding out why we feel the need to smoke is one of the first steps to finding ways to quit. So we will be discussing why we smoke as well as how we should go about putting an end to it for good. You need to know why you started, what it is doing to your body as well as ways to stop if this is what you are trying to do.

Why do I Smoke?

There are many reasons as to why someone smokes weed. It may be recreational, medical or socially. Do you smoke for pain management? Do you smoke because your friends are doing it? Figuring out why you feel like you need the weed can help in quitting.

If you are smoking for pain management then to be able to quit you will have to find alternatives to the marijuana. This is where professional help will come in. Talk to your doctor about other options to control your pain. Now many times people have had no luck with finding other pain management solutions and this is the reason they went to weed, to begin with. If this is the case in your situation then you may have to research and see if there are other options.

If you find that weed is helping you with depression, anxiety and other mental issues that you may be having then talking to a psychologist may help to find the underlying cause of your addiction. Everyone is different so of course, the reason behind using marijuana is going to be different. This also means that the ways that will help you quit will also be different. One way may help one person but not help at all with another person.

Am I addicted?

Many people may say that it is your choice to stop smoking pot. This is true and it is not. Just like with cigarettes, food and many other things people can be addicted. Addiction is not something to joke about. Having an addiction does not make you a bad person.

Just because you are addicted to something such as weed does not mean that you cannot end the cycle. Let us first look at some reasons to quit and then we can look at ways to help you quit.

Reasons to quit

Developmental delays

Many of today’s teens are smoking weed. Now in teen and adolescents, they are still growing. So every time they are using this it is killing the cells in their brains that are still growing. This can cause many delays. If the cells in the brain are dying then they cannot reach their full potential.

Problems with the respiratory system

Cigarette smokers can have a lot of health issues. Smoking marijuana can lead to some of these same health issues. Many of us do not realize that these things can be the same when it comes to our health.

Heart rate elevation

When we are ingesting weed into our bodies it causes our heart rate to increase. This can stay this way even after you have stopped smoking. This causes your heart to work harder than normal. Having this happen often can lead to health issues. In people who already have high blood pressure and heart conditions, this can make them worse.

Mood swings

Many people have found that their moods can change when they are using marijuana. It may be small changes that are not that noticeable; however, in many cases these changes are drastic. When you have a lot of mood swings this can cause issues with your psychological health.

Short term memory issues

Prolong use of this can lead to issues with your short-term memory. Many people may not see the harm in this but it can be drastic. We all have things to remember and many things are very important. We do not want to mess up any of our memory functions.

In many cases, people do not realize how their usage is affecting their everyday lives. If you have started noticing that smoking weed is hindering your life functions, then you may need to think about quitting before anything gets worse.

Things that can help

Talking

Many times having someone to talk to can help greatly, seek out counseling. There are many services available when it comes to addiction and abuse of marijuana as well as other addictions. These professionals can also help you find other resources to help you on your long journey.

Now in some cases, people do not feel comfortable talking to a stranger, this is alright. Even just talking with family and friends can help out a lot. Just having someone to listen sometimes is all we really need.

Rehabilitation

Depending on how much you smoke on a normal basis, you may find it very hard to just up and quit. So if you have tried other methods without any success then you may need to look into a program that can help you more. Just remember you did not get to this point overnight so it will take some time.

Make sure that you are finding anything and everything that can help you with this addiction. Keep in mind that by admitting that you have a problem is the first step to recovery. In many cases, this will be the hardest part of the journey. Asking for help does not make you a weak person.

Support Team and Groups

Find friends and family to help you. By letting people know that you are trying to stop can help greatly. Ask friends and family to help you by not letting you get it.

Many times we have friends that we smoke with so you will have to inform them that you are trying to quit. Let the people know that you normally get it from that you do not want to buy it.

Knowing that you are not the only one going through this can be helpful as well. There are many support groups that can help you deal and cope with everything that you are going through. You will be able to express how you are feeling as well as get help from others on ways to help you stop smoking.

The internet is a great place to find all the support groups in your area. You can also talk to your doctors and see what resources are available,

Occupy your time

This is another thing that has helped many people in the past. Find other things to do to occupy your time. If you stay busy with other things such as hobbies, sports and etc. then you will have less time to think about wanting it. Yes, the urge is still going to be there but it will pass. You may also want to distance yourself from parties where it may be tempting to smoke.

In many cases, weed has become routine for you just like with eating and other daily activities. So you will need to change this routine in order to stop. For some people, it may be like smoking cigarettes. You may smoke after meals or when you get up in the mornings. Changing these habits can be hard but with hard work and determination, it can be done.

You may have to start small and gradually build.

So for example, if you smoke when you get up then you will need to find something else to do when you get up. So change the time even by fifteen minutes and go for a jog or turn on some music. By changing the time and activity then you may find it easier to stop that smoke from happening. Do things to keep from being bored. A lot of times when we are bored and have nothing to do are the worst times. There are many things you can do instead of smoking weed.

Now as with quitting any type of addiction there will be good days and bad. There are many things people deal with when they are trying to quit. Here are some of the things that may happen. You may start having anxiety issues. You may find that you want to sleep more. Many people find that they are more agitated. These are all normal things and they should not alarm you.

This is why it is a good idea to let your family, friends and your doctor know what you are doing. Th8is way all the changes they are noticing will be understood. Many times you will notice changes in yourself and you may not like them. Just know that you are the same person and that you will get through all of it in time.

This journey will not be easy for some people. Sometimes it is easier to plan out how you will do things will make it easier. Here are some things that others have done to successfully stop smoking.

Goals

Like with setting other types of goals, it may make it easier if you set a goal for yourself before you start trying to quit. Make sure that the goal is reasonable. It is alright to start off small and work your way up. For example, if you smoke every day, you may set a goal for only smoking three times per week.

Tracking

It can be very motivational for you to track your progress. This way you can see how you are doing with the goals you are setting for yourself. Some people like to use a calendar t mark off days to their goal. Just make sure that you are doing things that help you.

Rewards

Even though making your goal is rewarding, it may be good to reward yourself somehow when you reach a goal. It does not have to be big things. Just a little way of saying look I made it through a week, a month and so on. Go to the movies with a friend. Buy yourself that shirt you have been wanting.

Journals

It may also help if you write down how you are feeling. In some cases when people are feeling down and out they want to smoke. So by finding the triggers that cause the urge, maybe it will help with controlling it. You can also write down how you feel when you do not smoke. You may come to find that you feel better not smoking then when you do.

This journey that you are embarking on is not going to be a fast or an easy one. Make sure that you are taking it one day at a time. You have to know why you want to do this. Do you want to be healthier? Is smoking weed affecting how you live life? It does not matter why or how you started or why you want to quit. Just know that with hard work you can do anything that you want to do.

Do not think that you have to do this all by yourself. You have family and friends that care about you and want to see you succeed. Do not be afraid to ask for help if you need it. It does not make you less of a person if you need help. Make sure that you are using all the resources that are available to you so that you can succeed in this journey.

Many times people try and fail many times before they succeed. Do not get discouraged if you take a few steps back. Just get up and try again, Even if you feel like your small goals are too small, they are not if you set that goal and achieve it. You can only truly fail if you do not try in the first place.

Hopefully, some of these suggestions will help you at least start your journey to quitting weed. There are many different ways people have quit marijuana. You just have to find what works for you and your situation. Everyone is different so just because one thing did not work, do not give up home. Believe in yourself. You can do anything that you set your mind to.
