Having a healthy body starts with exceptional oral care. If you do not engage in a daily oral hygiene routine, you could suffer from diseases like gingivitis, cavities, periodontal disease, and even abscesses which can lead to sepsis and possibly death. Take care to do these simple things to maintain a happy, healthy mouth.

Brush Properly

Many people do not realize that they are not brushing their teeth effectively. Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle relative to your gums and brush over the sides and top of your teeth with short strokes. Then brush the front and back of your teeth with the brush vertically oriented.

Floss Properly

When flossing, make sure to use a long enough length of floss so that you have fresh floss to use as you progress through each crevice.

Keep Your Brush Clean

If your toothbrush is not clean, how can you expect it to clean your mouth? Make sure to rinse your brush off with hot water after each brushing, and avoid covering it until it is dry.

Quit Smoking

If you are a smoker or chew tobacco, you are doing serious harm to your teeth. The benefits are twofold: quitting tobacco will reduce your chances of oral cancer and other periodontal diseases, and it will also keep you from using one of many methods most people use to cover the smell of tobacco. Coffee, candy, and tea are all used by tobacco smokers to get the smell of their breath, but they are also terrible for your teeth.

Get Your Vitamins

Your teeth are much like your bones: they require calcium in order to stay strong. Make sure to consume plenty of dairy products and other foods high in calcium and Vitamin D. Oral health also depends on Vitamin B, zinc, copper, iodine, iron and potassium. If you are not getting enough of these vitamins and minerals in your regular diet, make sure to take an appropriate multivitamin daily.
